Whitecaps announce retirement of charter team member, GWH alumna Winny Brodt-Brown after 18 seasons

The Minnesota Whitecaps announced Tuesday (Aug. 16) on Facebook and Twitter that charter team member and GWH alumna Winny Brodt-Brown is retiring after 18 seasons with the club. (Photo courtesy of the Whitecaps)

Brodt-Brown played three seasons with the Gophers, where she remains second in program history for points by a defender (134), third in blueliner goals (41) and assists (93), and sixth across all positions in assists-per-game (0.97). A member of the Gophers' 2000 National Championship squad, Winny was inducted into the university's M Club Hall of Fame in 2021.

Brodt-Brown was renowned in her high school days, winning the inaugural Minnesota Ms. Hockey Award in the 1995-1996 season while competing for Roseville. Her collegiate career began at the University of New Hampshire, where she recorded 11 goals and 34 assists as a freshman for the Wildcats. Following her first two seasons with the Gophers, Winny was a member of the U.S. Women's National Team, earning silver medals at the 2000 and 2001 IIHF Women's World Championships and recording a combined 5 assists in 10 games.

While her complete career stats with the Whitecaps are unavailable, Brodt-Brown's scoring line in the Premier Hockey Federation (formerly the National Women's Hockey League) includes a goal and 5 assists in 49 regular-season games and an additional two assists in 7 postseason contests over last four seasons. Winny and the Whitecaps competed in the Western Women's Hockey League from 2004 through 2011, then played multiple years as an independent club before joining the NWHL/PHF in 2018.

We send Winny our congratulations, thanks, and best wishes in retirement!!

Four current Gophers, four alumnae named to national teams for 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship in Denmark

Three Gopher representatives named to Select Teams for USA-Canada series this week; three U. of M. staff members assisting Team USA

Current (2022-2023) Gopher Women's Hockey players Josefin Bouveng, Taylor Heise, Nelli Laitinen & Grace Zumwinkle and Minnesota alumnae Hannah Brandt, Amanda Kessel, Kelly Pannek & Lee Stecklein have been selected by their respective countries' ice hockey organizations to wear their national colors at the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championship. The tournament is being held in Herning and Frederikshavn, Denmark, starting Thursday, August 25 and running through Sunday, September 4.

As reported last week, Laitinen was named to Finland's roster on August 3. Correcting our previous newsletter, this year's World Championship will mark her fourth top-level tournament appearance with the senior national team, following the 2019 & 2021 WWC and the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Bouveng was announced as a member of Team Sweden this past Thursday, August 11. This will be her first Women's World Championship appearance after she made her Olympic debut with the Swedes this past February.

Heise, Zumwinkle, Brandt, Kessel, Pannek & Stecklein were named to the Team USA roster yesterday morning (Aug. 14). Heise will be making her U.S. senior team debut after winning the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award last season as the best player in NCAA Division I women's hockey. The other five have previous WWC and Olympic experience, claiming the silver medal at the Beijing Winter Games.

Murphy, A. Potomak, Wethington named to Select/Development teams In addition to the World Championship roster announcements, USA Hockey and Hockey Canada named their respective rosters yesterday for the head-to-head Development Series later this week. Current Gophers Abbey Murphy & Madeline Wethington were named to the U.S. Collegiate Women's Select Team, which will face Minnesota alumna Amy Potomak and the Canada Women's National Development Team. The two squads will meet at WinSport Arena in Calgary, Alberta, with games on Wednesday (8/17), Thursday (8/18), and Saturday (8/20); puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT / 8:30 p.m. CT all three nights. Per a note from USA Hockey, the games will be streamed on Hockey Canada's website (schedule here).

Three Minnesota staff members serving in USA Hockey roles In addition to the player selections, three members of the U. of M. Athletics Department staff are serving in roles with USA Hockey. Cal Dietz, the strength and conditioning head coach for USA Hockey for the past several years, has been named to the staff roster for World Championship in Denmark. Minnesota Director of Hockey Operations Jessica Scott will be in Calgary to support the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team as they also play Canada in a three-game series this week. Brent Proulx, the long-time equipment manager for both the Gophers and USA Hockey, served at the recently-completed U.S. Women's National Festival.

We send congratulations and good luck wishes to all the Gopher representatives!!

Please note that Hockey Canada had not announced their World Championship roster at the time this issue of the Penalty Box Post was written. We encourage you to watch social media for any updates.

Recently-retired BSU athletics director Tracy Dill named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Interim Commissioner

The Board of Directors of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association approved the appointment of recently-retired Bemidji State University athletics director Tracy Dill as the league's Interim Commissioner, starting August 1. Dill takes over for Jennifer Flowers, who resigned the commissioner position in mid-June after three seasons.

Per comments from WCHA Board Chair Kevin Buisman in the announcement naming Dill to the position on Tuesday (July 5), a national search for a full-time replacement will commence at a date to be determined next spring. The league decided to not hold that search at this time due to the on-going work of the NCAA’s Transformation Committee to re-draft that body’s Constitution, and the present uncertainty while that process is occurring.

Four Gopher alumnae signed with Whitecaps for 2022-2023

The free-agent signing action in the Premier Hockey Federation has been fast and furious with the league's six teams combining for 58 signings between May 1 and July 3. Included in that have been four Gopher Women's Hockey alumnae who have all inked agreements to play with the Minnesota Whitecaps for the 2022-2023 season.

Sydney Baldwin came to terms with the 'Caps on May 24; she will begin her fourth season in St. Paul this fall. After spending a season in Europe and then joining the Whitecaps in 2021-2022, Patti Marshall signed for her second year in the PHF on June 15. Following the past five seasons with the Gophers, Olivia Knowles signed on June 23 to remain in Minnesota. Finally, decorated goaltender Amanda Leveille will return for a seventh PHF season and her fifth in St. Paul, coming to terms on June 29.

The Whitecaps currently sit in the middle of the PHF pack with 9 total signings to-date. The Buffalo Beauts lead the way with 16 free-agent signings, while the Boston Pride have yet to announce any.

NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee proposes rule changes for video review challenges and major penalty options

The NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee proposed several rules changes during its meeting last week in Indianapolis. Those proposals will now go to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel for approval on July 20, and would go into effect for the 2022-2023 season.

The most notable proposal is a reform of the video review and coaches' challenge system for reviewable plays. While no limit to the number of challenges was indicated, a first unsuccessful challenge would lead to a timeout being charged and any subsequent unsuccessful challenges would result in a minor penalty for delay of game. Additionally, “several reviewable plays will require a coaches' challenge for review, including goaltender contact, offsides infractions and high sticking the puck that leads to a goal. Referees continue to have discretion to review most aspects of the scoring of a goal and players where a major penalty is being considered.”

Additional discussion centered on the discontinuation of an automatic game misconduct or disqualification penalty for major infractions such as checking-from-behind and head contact. The committee approved a proposal allowing officials the option of issuing a major (five-minute) penalty without an ejection.

Another point of business was the review of overtime procedures for regular-season contests. The committee decided to maintain the practice of a mandatory five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period with the option for a shootout in situations where the game remains tied after OT (based on the host school's conference policy).

Kaiser, Team USA take silver at U18 Women's Worlds

We send a shout-out to incoming Gopher Women's Hockey freshman Madison Kaiser (photo courtesy of USA Hockey) and the rest of U.S. Women's U18 National Team following their silver-medal performance at the 2022 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship earlier this month in Madison, WI. Kaiser finished with a goal and 4 assists for 5 points, along with a +4 plus-minus rating. Unfortunately, the Americans came up short in the championship game; Canada built a 3-0 second period lead which Team USA trimmed to one, but the Canadians took home the gold with a 3-2 victory.

The Americans were the top seed for the playoff round after winning all three of their preliminary games, 6-1 over Sweden in their opener, 5-0 over Finland, and a surprising 7-0 shutout of the Canadians. With the quarterfinal bye, Team USA defeated Sweden again, 3-2 in come-from-behind fashion in the semis to advance to the title game.

Canada struggled early in the tournament, losing to Finland for the first time ever at the U18 Worlds, 2-0 on day 1. They did defeat Sweden, 3-1 in their second game, but their preliminary-round loss to Team USA sent them to 3rd place in Group A and a quarterfinal contest. That quarterfinal turned into Canada's own 7-0 blowout win as they downed Slovakia, and they avenged their earlier loss to Finland with a 2-1 semifinal victory.

Finland claimed the bronze medal with a 3-0 win over Sweden. That contest, too, was a measure of redemption for the Finns after having lost to the Swedes preliminary round (4-3).

Gopher Women's Hockey names 2022-2023 team captains

Returning seniors Abigail Boreen, Taylor Heise, Gracie Ostertag, and Grace Zumwinkle have been selected as captains of the Gopher Women's Hockey team for the 2022-2023 season, per an announcement from head coach Brad Frost on Thursday. As noted in the press release, all four will wear the captain's 'C', an occurrence which last happened in 2010-2011.

Zumwinkle served as captain in the 2020-2021 season before her year away with Team USA for the Beijing Winter Olympics. Heise and Ostertag served as captains in 2021-2022, leading the team to the program's 11th WCHA Regular-Season Championship. Boreen joins the other three as a first-time captain.

Congratulations, ladies!! We'll see you this autumn!!

Halldorson retires from University of Minnesota after 25+ years

The Power Play Club sends gracious and well-deserved congratulations, thank yous, and wishes of good luck to inaugural Gopher Women's Hockey head coach Laura Halldorson, who is retiring from the University of Minnesota after more than 25 years of service.

After leading the women's hockey team through its first 10 seasons of competition, amassing a 278-67-22 record (78.7% winning percentage) and 3 national championships (2000, 2004 & 2005), Halldorson turned the program over to Brad Frost in 2007 and took a role at the Golden Gopher Fund inside the U. of M. Athletics Department. She has been an ardent supporter of all Gopher student-athletes and their respective teams since then, and she has partnered closely with the Power Play Club Board of Directors in the club's fundraising efforts over that period. Halldorson's retirement was celebrated at the U. this past Monday, May 23. (Photo courtesy of Brad Frost on Twitter)

Thank you again, Coach Halldorson, for your service and support!!
