PWHL announces Detroit as home of next expansion team
The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) made its first expansion announcement for the 2026-2027 season, as PWHL Detroit was named as the newest franchise this past Wednesday, May 6. The addition brings the league to nine (9) teams.
The league indicated that details about further expansion and the forthcoming expansion roster building process will be announced in the coming weeks. According to reporting on ESPN.com, however, that process would not include an expansion draft (unlike last year with the addition of Seattle & Vancouver).
The league also announced that the Fox Theater in Detroit will host the 2026 PWHL Entry Draft, being held on Wednesday evening, June 17. Per the league's “Gold Plan” system, the Vancouver Goldeneyes will have the first overall draft pick, but the full draft order will be released later as playoff performance and the addition of Detroit and potentially other expansion teams are factored in.
