PPC Board of Directors Meeting – Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m.
The next Power Play Club Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for this coming Thursday, May 8. This is our annual visit with GWH head coach Brad Frost to discuss the past season and his vision for the upcoming year, including any fundraising needs from the club. The meeting will be held online via Zoom and is open to all club members who were enrolled for the 2024-2025 season; please contact PPC president Bill Johnson (billjohnson013@gmail.com) or vice president Dave Malerich (dmalerich@yahoo.com) if you wish to attend.
Volunteers requested to fill BOD openings...
As previously mentioned, we are still in need of volunteers to fill several open directorships on the club's board. Meetings are held monthly during the off-season (though usually skipping either July or August) for 60 to 90 minutes apiece, plus potential additional in-season meetings as deemed necessary. Our standard term length is two years, running April 1 through March 31. If you have any interest or want more information, please contact Bill Johnson or Dave Malerich.
To our GWH parents – One of our director positions is designated for a parent representative, and it is currently in need of being filled. Again, please contact Bill or Dave if you are interested and/or have questions.
Watch for an announcement of an upcoming spring fundraising campaign spanning all the Gopher Athletics varsity programs!!
PWHL expands again with new team in Seattle
Just a week after the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) announced its expansion to seven teams with a new club in Vancouver, British Columbia, the league announced the addition of an 8th squad, also in the Pacific Northwest in Seattle. The new Seattle squad will play its home games at Climate Pledge Arena, home of the NHL's Kraken and the WNBA's Storm, and will join Vancouver with 2025-2026 as its inaugural season.
Details about a forthcoming Expansion Draft and how both new teams will be integrated into the 2025 PWHL Draft are still to be announced over the coming weeks. The latter event is scheduled for June 24.
Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa & Minnesota clinch spots in 2025 Walter Cup Playoffs – The Ottawa Charge and Minnesota Frost clinched spots in the 2025 Walter Cup Playoffs yesterday as a result of regular season-ending victories, joining the Montréal Victoire and Toronto Sceptres. Ottawa defeated Toronto, 2-1 in overtime, to advance to the postseason after missing last year's playoffs. Minnesota, needing a road win in regulation, routed Boston, 8-1, for a chance to defend their 2024 Walter Cup championship. Montréal locked in the #1 seed thanks to Toronto's loss, but they also won yesterday, 3-2 over New York.
As the top team concluding the regular season, Montréal has the choice of whether to face #3-seed Ottawa or #4-seed Minnesota in the league semifinals, leaving the other to face #2-seed Toronto. That decision will be announced this evening (Sunday, May 4) at 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT on a special edition of Jocks in Jills on thepwhl.com and the PWHL’s YouTube channel.
The series in Toronto will begin with Game 1 on Wednesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT, and the Game 1 of the series in Montréal will begin on Thursday, May 8, also at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT.
We send wishes of good luck to the seven Gopher Women's Hockey alumnae on playoff teams (active and reserves): Abby Boreen (MTL), Taylor Heise (MIN), Lucy Morgan (OTT), Kelly Pannek (MIN), Lee Stecklein (MIN) and Grace Zumwinkle (MIN).
